What an exciting time it’s been!

We held nine summer programs in June, July, and August, reaching students 6-18 years old.  As well as week-long intensives in musical theatre and acting, we performed two full productions. Aladdin Jr had a cast of 45 students and featured laughter, merriment, and ribbon dancing. Into the Woods, our first-ever Teen Conservatory, was beautifully directed by Broadway star and Associate Artistic Director Jeff Binder and featured teens from near and far who auditioned to be part of a thrilling three weeks.

Hurricane Irma caused us to cancel our Fall 2017 after school programs. However, we began our popular in-school ThinkTheatre programs with a wonderful Poetry and Performance residency at Lorenzo Walker Technical High School, working with 70 tenth-graders. Right now, we’re traveling out to Everglades City School, where fifth-graders are learning theatre skills and getting ready to put on a performance of The Lorax.

Our new addition to ThinkTheatre is our touring education play for school audiences, In Flight. This collaboration with The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida tells the true story of local Holocaust survivor Sabine Van Dam, who, in 1942, fled the Netherlands with her sister and parents. As well as seeing the 30-minute play, students engage in workshop about Holocaust history and community peacemaking.

There are two opportunities for the public to see In Flight. The first is at the The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida Luncheon at 11:30AM on Friday, December 15. The second is at the Norris Center on that same night, December 15,  at 7:00PM

We are also thrilled to be working with Artis–Naples on a show with The Naples Philharmonic for all the 11th graders in Collier County in April 2018! The world’s most famous love story, Romeo and Juliet, finds new life in Starcrossed, a magical meeting of theatre and music. World-class actors and musicians from Gulfshore Playhouse and the Naples Philharmonic will tell this epic fable of feuding families and star-crossed lovers in this special performance.

And speaking of Shakespeare, we are holding auditions for our new Teen Acting Company on December 3 and 4 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM. Teens will perform William Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, receive pre-professional training in acting, voice and movement, attend professional performances and talkbacks, and work with visiting artists from across the US.
