FOR THEATER-LOVERS, GULFSHORE PLAYhouse’s annual New Works Festival is akin to celebrating a birth — or in this case, triplets: three spanking-new, never-before-produced plays. “It’s one of my favorite things,” says Associate Artistic Director Jeffrey Binder. The event, he says, is many things all rolled into one.
“It’s a real opportunity for someone interested in theater to see a work in progress being created almost in front of them,” he says. “It’s a fun way to have your finger on the pulse of the national conversation and see fantastic plays written by people all over the country who are eager to have their work seen and heard.
“And it’s a wonderful way to keep yourself aware of what kind of stories they want to tell and how they want to tell them.”
In its seventh year, the New Works Festival is “as cutting-edge and at the forefront of the national play scene as you can get,” Mr. Binder says. “You’re getting it right off (the playwright’s) computer screen.”
