Naples take on ‘Forum’ twists the genders but puts the fun first

The current production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is about to be a dream come true to every overworked female who has declared “I need a wife!”

Its women are all about to get them.

Gulfshore Playhouse has done some genderbending of the Stephen Sondheim musical to make most of its major male roles female and vice versa. So, for those who know its storyline, the courtesans of ancient Rome are about to look more like Chippendales than Hooters girls.

For those who don’t know the plot, “Forum,” which opens Saturday, Nov. 17, takes a lot more time to explain than to enjoy. It’s farce — in fact, Kristen Mengelkoch, who plays Pseudolus, the musical’s main character, pointed out that its script notes offer that “this show is vaudeville and should be treated as such.”
