I BEGAN THE YEAR AS A MAN AND I’M ENDING it as a man,” declares the definitely feminine Kristen Mengelkoch. “I guess 2018 was about trying to do it all. But I promise I’m a woman! I identify as a woman.”

At the beginning of the year, she performed in a new play, “Lost Laughs: The Slapstick Tragedy of Fatty Arbuckle,” at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, Mass. Her fellow actor played Mr. Arbuckle, while she played “everyone else, including men,” such as silent film star Buster Keaton.

And now, she’s playing the lead role of Pseudolus in Gulfshore Playhouse’s production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” which runs through Dec. 30. (Though typically played by a male, the role was famously played by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1996 Broadway revival, replacing Nathan Lane.)
