It’s been an exciting few months in education!

Since September, we’ve carried out ten ThinkTheatre programs at schools across the region, bringing the arts to the schools and working with teachers to design programs that complement their curriculum. We recently finished a Shakespeare residency at Barron Collier High School and are excited that the students will be joining us at The Merchant of Venice this coming Thursday. We’re just finishing a Language and Leadership residency at Immokalee Community School and are in rehearsal for productions of The Lorax and The Velveteen Rabbit at Donahue Academy.

On Wednesday, we’ll finish our Poetry and Performance program with a poetry slam at Estero High School.  Below is a poem our student Meline bravely volunteered to workshop in front of the class yesterday. We love how Meline used her experience as a cheerleader to talk about taking risks.

Students at East Naples Middle School rehearse for their final presentation

The time I felt out of place
was when I started cheerleading
and didn’t know how to do anything
like a kid running around
mimicking the crowd.
Everyone knew how to cheer
and I was just learning.
Years later
I know how to tumble
just like everyone around me.

Into the Woods!

On Monday, May 1 at 5:00PM, we have AUDITIONS for our Teen Conservatory, open to students 13-18 years old. This year our show will be Into the Woods, directed by Gulfshore Playhouse Artistic Associate Jeffrey Binder. You may recognize Jeff from his performance as Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady and as Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles – and from Broadway as Zazu in The Lion King and Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins! To register for an audition, call Hester at (239) 261-7529 x207.

Aladdin Jr!

And of course, our summer programs open to Naples residents on April 3 and to residents outside the city of Naples on April 17! We have many exciting adventures planned this summer, from week-long acting intensives to a huge production of Aladdin Jr! High school students who love theatre may also be interested in earning community service hours by becoming Guiding Stars and working in class and behind the scenes.

Holocaust Survivor Sabine van Dam tells her story

Finally, we are honored to be working with the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida on a project we’ll bring to schools this fall: an interactive play based on Holocaust survivor Sabine van Dam’s journey from 1939-1945. Stay tuned for more news about In Flight: The Story of Sabine van Dam!
