Naples is rated the No. 1 small arts city in the United States, a book author revealed Wednesday during a press conference in Naples.

The author rated arts communities in various sized cities under 100,000 and Naples rated No. 1 in those communities of 30,000 and under.

John Villani is the author of "The 100 Best Art Towns in America," fourth edition.

"You beat Aspen,’’ Villani told a small crowd of mostly media gathered at the Phil for the announcement.

Villani’s book is a travel guide for art lovers.

"People think of Naples as a beach community,’’ he said. "You are so much more.’’

Naples would be in the top 10 of any sized arts cities in the country, he said.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts off of U.S. 41 North near the Pelican Bay subdivision.

Myra Daniels, chairwoman and founder of the Phil, scheduled Wednesday’s press conference at 11 a.m. for an announcement about Naples and the arts
