Who can resist that challenge? Not Southwest Florida writers.
Florida Stories 2, the second annual writing competition sponsored
by Gulfshore Playhouse, tells the story of local writers meeting
the challenge. The 10 winning entries will be read by professional
actors at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Norris Center in Naples.
"The winners' stories exhibited a combination of heart,
humor and theatricality that makes for a great evening of
entertainment," said Kristen Coury, Gulfshore Playhouse
founder and producing artistic director.
Nearly 50 writers took on the competition's theme of a meaningful
Florida experience.
"The poem is a thank-you to the ecology of the area and
the environment," said Victor Hill of his work, "Paddling
Johnson Bay." "I was trying to capture one of those
times when you have it all to yourself."
Chrissie Paddock said her monologue, "The Magic of First
Times," is autobiographical, based on her first Florida
visit. "It's a returning to the love that was."
"Chance Encounters," a play by Roger Weatherburn
Baker, explores receiving recognition as an artist in Naples.
"It's about support for the arts in multiple forms,"
he said.
Hearing their work read adds another dimension to the competition
for writers.
"I know in my mind what this monologue should sound like,"
said Patti Corsini Caroli, who was inspired by her move to
Naples to write, "I Wasn't Meant To Live Here."
"It's a combination of the excitement and the anticipation
of sitting back there to see how someone who's never read
it before will interpret your words," said Paddock, who
also won last year.
"I try to figure out what the person is like or was thinking,"
said actor and writer Leigh Shein, about reading other writers'
works. He'll also read his monologue, "Who Needs Changing?"
which looks at relationships between generations.
Other winners are Karla Thompson ("DUI: Driving Under
The Influence Or Dealing With Unresolved Issues"); Margaret
Lynch ("A Day In The Life Of A Florida Senior");
Lisa Campione ("Live For Today"); Patricia Sullivan
("Love Is In The Air"); and student winner Claire
Hughes ("The Cat").
