Fun was had by all on the evening
of April 13th at the Norris where the first annual Florida
Stories contest winners were presented by professional actors
in a staged-reading. A staged-reading is a book-in-hand presentation
with minimal props and scenery pieces, but using theatrical
lighting. Producing Artistic Director Kristen Coury started
the evening by announcing the names of the 10 winners, presenting
them with certificates and describing the process. "Testament
to the fact that we need our own space," Coury explained
with a smile, "we only were able to rehearse for 3 and
1/2 hours today, coming together for the first time, and are
using the lighting that actually exists for "Pump Boys
and Dinettes". The show was elegantly crafted, a seamless
mix of comedy and tragedy, laughter and humanity, with themes
ranging from moving to Florida for the first time to experiencing
the loss of a loved one. "It was so much fun to figure
out the show order, in other words, which play or monologue
went where as that was an important part of the presentation,
"said Coury. "The great thing was, all the winning
pieces were excellent, so we were very blessed." Coury
admits that "Florida Stories" could possibly be
