Review: Gulfshore Playhouse scores with powerhouse production of "Doubt"

The Gulfshore Playhouse hits a home run with its production of "Doubt, A Parable," John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize-winning work that dissects matters of faith, truth and morality. From the first sermon to the last, shuddering admission of doubt, the play is a triumph of acting, directing and staging.

The play is, quite literally, about "doubt," faith, the dangers of moral certainty and the cost of trying to always occupy the moral high ground. Set at a 1964 Catholic school, stern principal Sister Aloysius comes to believe - with absolute surety - that the more liberal Father Flynn has molested a student. Armed only with little more than her rock-solid belief that wrongdoing has been done, Sister Aloysius begins a campaign to destroy Father Flynn.

Theater review: Did he or didn't he? Uncertainty lingers long after the powerful "Doubt"

She tightly purses her lips, folds her hands together and aims her withering glare like it's the all-seeing eye of God.

Sister Aloysius disapproves.

She does that a lot.

Throughout Gulfshore Playhouse's outstanding staging of the drama "Doubt," Sister Aloysius stands as a fierce beacon of propriety, an unyielding wall of old Catholic ways.

That attitude sets the tone for what comes next, when Aloysius trains that cold glare on the popular Father Flynn and accuses him of molesting the Catholic school's only black student.

'Doubt' and Doubts of a Workingman

WHEN John Patrick Shanley steps into a Midtown Manhattan hangout known for its theater clientele, few would guess how much he belonged.

There is little about his sure gait, workingman hands or no-nonsense affect that flicks at the artist within, let alone a playwright, often the more delicately wrought of the species. Only the eyes, weakened by glaucoma but working, suggest anything other than a tough guy from the Bronx. And in that gaze he is constantly calibrating everything around him, seeing a great deal and concluding not much.

"It's an important part of my personality that I continually adjudicate, but I never reach a verdict," he explains.
