Kristen Coury, Producing Artistic Director

Kristen is the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Gulfshore Playhouse, for whom she has directed “Romeo and Juliet Redefined” a project she conceived using Shakespeare’s original script with added dance, music and song.  She also directed David Mamet’s “Oleanna” starring Alan Campbell,  to great reviews, as well as the one-night events  “3 Men and a Diva” starring Carol Lawrence, and “Florida Stories”, an annual staged-reading of the winners of a local writing contest. Her duties at the Playhouse include supervision of this flourishing not-for-profit, producing and directing the shows, doing presentations, and overseeing public relations, as well as day-to-day business.Kristen’s biography is included  in the 2007 edition of “Who’s Who in American Women”.

Kristen first directed “Oleanna” in Raleigh, NC, for “Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy”, which was subsequently voted one of the top ten productions of 2006 in the Raleigh-Durham Triangle.  She made her feature film directorial debut with “Friends and Family”, a comedy starring Tony LoBianco, Tovah Feldshuh, and Anna Maria Alberghetti, which was released around the US and Europe, and can now be seen on DVD and Cable TV worldwide.

Kristen directed the first production of “Waiting for the Glaciers to Melt”, a new musical by Tony-nominated Brian Lane Green, a project that she helped develop over two years from a variety of poetry and songs by Green.   “Glaciers” was listed on Theatremania.com’s 2003 wrap-up under the heading “Shows You Should Have Seen But Probably Didn’t”.  She is the Executive Producer of a CD version of the music from “Glaciers”.

Kristen has worked on a variety of musicals in various stages of development, including “Steel Pier” (with Karen Ziemba) on Broadway, a Broadway-workshop of “The Jazz Singer” (with Sam Harris), and “Houdini” at the Goodspeed Opera House.  She is a member of the Lark Theatre Company’s Literary Wing, helping discover talented new playwrights, and has directed countless readings of new works.  Kristen has written several screenplays, including “Noble Rot” based on a novel by local author and gallery owner Roger Weatherburn Baker.

Kristen worked in production/management for Walt Disney Theatrical Productions (working on international productions of “Beauty and the Beast” and “King David”), Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Company (“Sunset Boulevard” on Broadway and “Joseph” on Tour), and for London’s English Shakespeare Company in the Press and Marketing Department.
